How to Get the Right Diagnosis

By

After five years and visits to seventeen specialists who could not diagnose his illness, Intelligence analyst Randolph Pherson’s family doctor sent him to the Emergency Room because he had a “look of gloom” on his face. The ER doctors dismissed him twice, but he refused to go home, believing his condition was becoming dire. They acquiesced, scheduled him for a simple procedure, and told him he would drive himself home the next day. That did not happen.  He was scheduled instead for major surgery the next morning that saved his life.

The author learned a lot about how the medical system operates in the United States over the five years of his sojourn. This book condenses what he learned into 16 actions a person can and should take to ensure quality health care. The author describes five analytic techniques to spur a correct diagnosis, five obstacles most people will need to overcome when seeking treatment, and six tips for building an effective partnership with your doctor.

The purpose of the book is to help others to live to tell their stories by applying the lessons learned during the author’s journey by applying the techniques intelligence analysts use. The author is convinced that more people would have lived if they had adopted this advice and resisted current systemic pressures to treat illness and not diagnose them.

Connecting with the Universe and Your Own Deepest Desires

Open a conversation with the world around you: We have the ability to be in open communication with the Universe, the loving energy behind all creation. But do we listen to what the Universe has to say? Do we use our own voices to speak back? Artist-photographer, popular radio host, and blogger Melisa Caprio helps us enter into deep conversation with the Universe through combining creative visualization with the power of intention.

Identify the desires of your heart: Too often we are so caught up in daily life that we don’t stop and ask ourselves what we truly desire. While it is tempting to stay in our comfort zone, our heart longs for more than the mundane. It desires manifestation. Caprio is here to foster that state of mindfulness and spirituality through photography, postcard art, written messages, and affirmations from others who are living their greatest desires.

Harness your own spiritual power: Creators, mystics, artists, and spiritualists will find representation and inspiration in this book. Likewise, those who have been putting their dreams on hold or who are dissatisfied with the status quo will find this book to be a visual guide to attaining the creativity they long for in their lives. Each of us possesses the power to bend the ear of the Universe and share what it is we want most.

Postcards to the Universe: Harness the Universe’s Power and Manifest Your Dreams, a self-help book designed to foster personal and spiritual development, will help you:

  • Put mind over matter and pursue your deepest desires
  • Form an active and poignant relationship with the Universe
  • Reach your full potential and feel empowered to live an inspired and successful life

If books such as The Universe Has Your BackBecoming Supernatural, and Mind to Matter have spoken to you, then you’ll love Melisa Caprio’s Postcards to the Universe.

A Bright Clean Mind

By

A Bright Clean Mind will be a breezy yet substantial read that lends itself to “dipping back in,” a paperback original with a 5.5” x 8.5” trim size for portability (and gift-ability!) The readership is much the same as well: creative people who want to evolve out of the anxiety and frustration that have characterized so much of their artistic process up to now. A Bright Clean Mind will be primarily for “veg-curious” creatives—artists and entrepreneurs who have heard a plant-based diet is better for their health, but haven’t yet made the connections between diet, empathy for non-human animals, and creative output—though it will also appeal to readers who are already moving toward a more compassionate lifestyle, as well as vegans seeking creative inspiration. Now that the older members of Generation Z (no doubt the most politically-engaged generation since the 1960s) are purchasing their own food, plant protein and non-dairy products will eventually dominate the market—and these young vegans (and “vegan-ish”) will reach for books on creativity and culture that reflect their values. As veganism goes truly mainstream, artists and entrepreneurs of older generations who routinely experience anxiety, frustration, and other corrosive emotions will be ever more receptive to A Bright Clean Mind's message, too.

The science behind hugging. Dr. Stone’s prescription is for a 21-second hug today and every day. One of the many benefits of hugging is that longer hugs have proven physiological benefits. Hugs are good for your immune system, your stress response, your sleep patterns, and so much more.

Hug Therapy brings to life the meaning of hugging. In this book, you will discover:

  • What it means to really, truly give yourself and others the profound gift of a hug
  • How to be powerfully in action and more aware of what matters to you most
  • That you may choose to begin hugging some strangers…with their blessing of course
  • And perhaps most importantly, that together, one literal or metaphorical hug at a time, we make the world a better, healthier, and more connected place.

Embrace life. Hug Therapy shares a full-on, unconditional hug from Dr. Stone Kraushaar. In this book, he invites you to wrap your arms around yourself, your life, and everyone around you in a whole new way. Parenting the New Teen in the Age of Anxiety

A Guidebook for Parents Navigating the New Teen Years

Learn about the “New Teen” and how to adjust your parenting approach. Kids are growing up with nearly unlimited access to social media and the internet, and unprecedented academic, social, and familial stressors. Starting as early as eight years old, children are exposed to information, thought, and emotion that they are developmentally unprepared to process. As a result, saving the typical “teen parenting” strategies for thirteen-year-olds is now years too late.

Urgent advice for parents of teens. Dr. John Duffy’s parenting book is a new and necessary guide that addresses this hidden phenomenon of the changing teenage brain. Dr. Duffy, a nationally recognized expert in parenting for nearly twenty-five years, offers this book as a guide for parents raising children who are growing up quickly and dealing with unresolved adolescent issues that can lead to anxiety and depression.

Unprecedented psychological suffering among our young and why it is occurring. A shift has taken place in how and when children develop. Because of the exposure they face, kids are emotionally overwhelmed at a young age, often continuing to search for a sense of self well into their twenties. Paradoxically, Dr. Duffy recognizes the good that comes with these challenges, such as the sense of justice instilled in teenagers starting at a young age.

Readers of this book will:

  • Sort through the overwhelming circumstances of today’s teens and better understand the changing landscape of adolescence
  • Come away with a revised, conscious parenting plan more suited to addressing the current needs of the New Teen
  • Discover the joy in parenting again by reclaiming the role of your teen’s ally, guide, and consultant

If you enjoyed parenting books such as The Yes BrainHow to Raise an AdultThe Deepest Well, and The Conscious Parent; then Parenting the New Teen in the Age of Anxiety should be next on your list!

Sex After Grief

Reclaim Your Sexuality After Loss

An Honest Approach to Hard Questions: Sex is complicated at the best of times—but when we’re overcome by grief, it’s especially mysterious and confusing. How do we nurture ourselves as sexual beings when we’re grieving the death of a partner? Why does taking care of ourselves sexually matter at a time when we’d rather hide under the covers and wail? How do we know when it’s time to open ourselves to the sexual phase of a new relationship? And how do we do it?

A Grief Book like No Other: Sex after Grief is the first book to address sex and grief together and treat sex as a normal, positive, life-affirming part of emerging from such a difficult time. Joan Price, the top expert on senior sex, draws on her own experiences as a widow since 2008, when she lost the love of her life to cancer. She shares her raw grief journey, sexual reawakening (and the many stumbles along the way), and attempts to dip back into dating, along with excellent advice on handling each step.

Recovery on Your Own Timeline, in Your Own Way: As Price says, there’s no right or wrong method or timeline for bringing our sexuality back into into our lives, whether it’s with our own hands, a friend with benefits, a hook-up, a new companion, or any combination. Sex After Grief includes a variety of people’s personal stories from folks of all genders and orientations. Some jumped into sex quickly. Some took years. Some withdrew from sexual possibility. No one was wrong, and no choice is defective or shameful.

Sex After Grief includes:

  • Inspiring tales of how different people brought sex back into their lives after the loss of their spouse or partner
  • Guidelines for dating again and getting sexual with a new person
  • Reasons that solo sex is healthy and can be the path to feeling sexual again
  • Advice from therapists, grief counselors, and sex coaches
  • Self-help takeaways for creating an action plan

Readers of Modern LossThe Grief Recovery Handbook and Second Firsts will grow from and appreciate Sex After Grief.

Rediscover Love and Desire after Sexual Assault

Readers of The Body Keeps the ScoreThe Deepest Well and Trauma Stewardship should read Want: Recovering Desire after Sexual Assault.

Have the courage to heal. We know, increasingly, how common and devastating sexual violence is for women, but we don’t always talk about how survivors can recover from the trauma and return to desire, sexuality, trust, and pleasure. Want is the story of how Julie Peters did just that—and how you can, too.

Move past the fog of trauma.  In the years after the assault, Julie was in what she calls the fog of trauma: the colorless, tasteless experience of barely getting through the day. No one—not counsellors, support groups, or other survivors—could give her any advice about how to find the desire that could bring her back to joy, intimacy, and connection. She had to make it up on her own. In Want, Julie tells the story of getting from the devastation of trauma to living a full life in eight sometimes challenging, often bumbling, and occasionally delightful steps.

Experience hope, healing and recovery. We have plenty of stories about the helplessness, frustration, and vengeful feelings that can follow trauma. Culturally, we have started a conversation about these experiences, and we’re all confused about what this all means for our relationships with each other. We need stories of hope, healing, and recovery. Survivors of assault, if you've been thinking to yourself, "I thought it was just me," Julie is here to show you that you are not alone. Your loved ones may not know how to support you, but they can learn more about your experiences and how to walk alongside you through this book, just as you can learn how to recover from the trauma you've experienced. Want offers a window into one person’s experience of recovery—plus the happy ending we all need to know is possible after trauma.

Living FULL

Winning My Battle With Eating Disorders

Finding My FULL: This is my journey from starving to letting myself be FULL–physically & emotionally. What is living a FULL life? Having anorexia, bulimia, or vacillating between the two, you are trying to achieve an empty feeling through starvation or purging. Living a FULL life is a life where you aren’t starving anymore―starving for acceptance and love from others and yourself. It’s a life where you are feeding your mind and soul with good thoughts and foods. A life without your eating disorder.

Victim of the eating disorder monster: Imagine waking in a hospital bed to find your frail, pale arm punctured by an IV transferring fluids and nutrients into your weak, stiff body. What happened? You’re an adult, age twenty-six, and you just had a seizure precipitated by your chronic, secretive, decades-long struggle with unacknowledged eating disorders. You have no friends and no normal young-adult experiences. Living FULL is written by Danielle Sherman-Lazar, a woman who passed through the eating disorder crucible to recovery, sharing the most intimate and shameful details of her mental illness. Living FULL is Danielle's story.

Hidden out of shame: Eating disorders in young adults are hardly talked about, but are pervasive. Eating disorders are kept hidden out of shame. A groundbreaking 2012 study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders found that about 13 percent of women over age 50 exhibit eating disorder symptoms.

Journey to recovery: Living FULL chronicles the author's step-by-step descent into the full-blown eating disorder nightmare and her path to recovery. Recovery comes from the Maudsley Approach, a regimen of supervised controlled eating or refeeding by out-patient helpers that eventually can result in recovery.

Benefits of reading Living FULL:

  • See how to confront your eating disorder demon
  • Learn from someone who won her eating disorder battle
  • Discover a new and beautiful life

How to Ikigai

By

Why isn’t every day meaningful for every person? Is it even possible to live each day in meaningful ways? Sure it is. Let me tell you about a tiny, tiny, tiny little island south of Japan where people live their life’s purpose every day. They are happy. They are fulfilled. They are some of the oldest living people in the world. Their secret is ikigai. Ikigai is a concept that comes from Okinawa, Japan. Ikigai is a simple but abstract map for living a meaningful life. It has four directions: 1. Do what you love 2. Do what you’re good at 3. Do what the world needs 4. Do what you can be rewarded for Although these directions seem simple they are deceivingly difficult to do. This book will transform ikigai from its abstract form into a simple practice that is within reach for anyone. The key is to start with part-time ikigai. Examples of ikigai in action are often magical. As a young boy and into his adulthood David Michaels stuttered severely. In clinical terms his stutter was considered the most difficult to treat. But David started to work in a liquor store. Before long his focus turned to one specific section of the sales floor; the scotch section. He learned that each scotch whiskey ever made has unique tasting notes that make it special. David became obsessed with scotch. As he spent more of his days learning about scotch he began to share his knowledge with customers. Like singer Mel Tillis' stutter disappeared when he sang, David noticed that his stutter vanished when he talked to anyone about scotch. David credits his triumph over his stutter to his passion for scotch whiskey. Today he is a renowned whiskey expert and travels the world tasting and purchasing whiskey on behalf of his employer. He feels his life is meaningful because of ikigai. In the 1990's Kevin Kent worked as a sous chef at the famed St. John restaurant under celebrated chef Fergus Henderson. One day in the kitchen Kevin saw another worker using a Japanese carbon steel knife. It was the most beautiful tool / piece of art he had ever seen. Of course he wanted one. But Japanese knives are handmade and expensive. Kevin decided to save up to purchase one for himself. He was hooked by the romance of forged steel honed razor sharp into a blade that made his job a delight. Kevin moved back to Calgary. His passion for Japanese knives followed him. He continued his trade in the kitchen but he brought a few knives back from London to sell to other chefs. Kevin's flare for knife sales was immediate. So he went to work to open a shop that specialized in Japanese knives. He made friendships and connections with important knife makers in Japan. He opened his first store called Knifewear. His ikigai is the usefulness and art of sharpness. Today Kevin owns four Knifewear stores. He is considered the leading expert and supplier of Japanese knives in Canada. Mandy Stobo has a knack for connecting to people through her art. When she was a young single mother she struggled to understand how her art could matter during the social media explosion. She started to grab profile photos of remarkable people online and paint “bad portraits” of them. She’d snap a photo and send them a copy of her painting with the heading “Bad Portrait time!” The recipients started to use their bad portraits as their profile photos. Her popularity and connection to people grew. Today, Mandy will happily paint a bad portrait of anyone who asks. She has a special double ikigai: “To create” and “To delight”
