Ah, intrinsic motivation! It is that innate ability to get things done because you have to. No pep talks, no bribing yourself, no engaging in some creative mind trick to ratchet up your motivation-o-meter. You simply set your mind to it and away you go.

It’s amazing, it’s effective, but sometimes it can be frustratingly elusive. Maybe the possibility of failure is weighing down on you, maybe you don’t think you have what it takes, maybe you simply find an activity too boring to muster any effort.

Whatever it is; you’ve got an entry on your to-do list, a milestone on your life plan, or an activity you can’t evade that demands you dig your heels in.

Want to know how to find the inspiration and will to take that crucial first step, and just as importantly, see a process through? This expansive list comprises inspirational books exploring different approaches with one end goal—to motivate you.

#5 Don’t Quit While You’re Ahead by Cynthia MacGregor

There are many reasons people settle for having less success than they might. But why not continue to strive for even greater gain and make more of a name for yourself? In this book I wrote, among the reasons people slack off in their pursuit of success and the money that comes with it are complacency, plain ol’ laziness, fear that people won’t like them as well if they’re too successful, fear that they’ll strive to keep succeeding but fail instead, fear of the changes that might come with advanced success…and many others. Among those others are religious beliefs. Some people think there’s something morally or spiritually wrong in amassing great wealth. There isn’t. The Army’s old slogan, “Be all that you can be” applies to you, too. Don’t stop till you have everything you want and then some! Greatness can be yours!

#6 What’s Stopping You? by Cynthia MacGregor

In this book I authored, I explore are you truly happy with what you wound up doing in life? Or do you sometimes reach back into your secret stash of dreams and revisit them wistfully, remembering the days when you still believed you’d get to be a doctor, a lawyer, the owner of a big business or a small but profitable store that specialized in selling something you truly cared about, a teacher of disabled students, the mayor of your city, a charter pilot who owns his or her own plane, or an undersea explorer? Why didn’t your dreams come true for you? And if they didn’t come true then, why not make them come true now?

#7 The 52 Weeks by Karen Amster-Young & Pam Godwin

Top experts are featured throughout the book I wrote - from doctors to CEOs to relationship experts. It is timely as it provides a blueprint if you will; easy to follow steps for getting unstuck and is especially a fit for your story/ for new year. The chapters cover topics common to most people, covering all areas of their lives typically associated with trying to get motivated and move forward: giving back, career, love, facing fears and wellness and so on.

#9 What is and isn’t Working for the Alcoholic by Alberta Sequeira

I'm the author and after losing my husband and daughter from their alcohol and drug addiction, I had 34 contributors (alcoholics, drug, and prescription users) tell their stories with how they recovered, how, and advise to doctors, counselors, and family members.

I'm recommending the book because of the contributors will motivate, not only other addicts but family members on how we innocently enable our loved ones to pull them deeper into their habit. Addicts sharing their experience, strength, and hope with others is something that only a recovering addict or alcoholic can do. It is a unique gift.

This is a book to get into the mindset to learn what the addicted needs to want the desire to reach out for recovery. Two women in the book started at young ages; one was five and the other was seven. It goes to show our children are not too young to get motivated.

#13 The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch

The brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough. They're there to stop the other people”. This is a quote from the book that never fails to inspire. For a person who faces his death while writing this book, he gives advice which makes us think- what would we do if our days in this world were numbered.

#14 The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson

It might not sound as motivational as others you might get sent - but stick with me here! Mark Manson is a fantastic writer, (his blog is awesome too). In ‘The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F’, he makes us address the things in life we waste our time on. We can’t help it, we all sweat the small stuff from time to time, but in this book, he helps you realign where exactly you should be focusing that energy on - imagine all the things we could accomplish if we only used our ‘F’s’ on the bigger stuff? It’s a great read and really motivated me to address how I prioritize situations.

#15 The War of Art by Steven Pressfield

Whether you’re an artist or an entrepreneur, we all face this invisible toxic force that Pressfield names resistance. This force keeps us from doing what we want and makes sure we always feel terrible because of it. The War of Art is a guide through the swamp of resistance and will pump you up to beat your inner demons into submission.

#16 Talent Is Overrated by Geoff Colvin

We are blessed to live in the greatest time in history to be alive because we have every resource we could possibly need to be successful. The thing that stops most of us is the thought that without talent you’re stuck. The truth is that drive is far more important than talent. In his book, Colvin details what it takes to be great and that more instead of your genes, it’s practice makes perfect.

#17 This Is the Day by Tim Tebow

I have read a lot of motivational books, but for some reason, this book clicked with me and really pushed me further to work on my passions. The book is casual, making it almost feel I was talking with Tim himself. It's very inspirational, and at the end of each chapter, it ends with a way to immediately apply what you just learned, basically telling you what you should be doing RIGHT now. I know Tim Tebow gets some grief in the media, but I really encourage those who are looking for motivation to check it out. It really surprised me, to be honest.

#18 Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson

“Who Moved My Cheese?” is one of my favorite books for motivation because it can be read in a single sitting. It requires a short time commitment to get the entire message of the story and can be re-read many times, each time teaching the reader a new lesson. At the end of a stressful day, it can be daunting to pick up a big book that is challenging to understand, the simplicity of this book makes it easy to pick up on a regular basis and continue to learn from.

The lesson in “Who Moved My Cheese?” is learning to accept and adapt to change, because of this, I think the message is applicable to both personal and professional aspects of life and is easy for all reader’s to relate to.
