Storytelling for Everyone/ Talking Eggs: A Creole Folktale from the American South

In the old days, a widow had two daughters. Rose was older and mean, while Blanche was kind. The family ran a farm where chicken were raised; beans and cotton were grown. The mother favored Rose while Blanche did all the work like iron the clothes, cut the cotton, and string the beans. Her mother and Rose sat on the porch in their rocking chairs, fanning themselves and making plans to one day move to the city and attend the balls there.

One hot day, the mother sent Blanche to obtain some water from the well. When Blanche arrived there, she met an old woman who asked for some water to quench her thirst. Blanche gave her the water and the old woman was grateful.
