Who Are You, And What Do You Do?

My name is Allen Klein, and I am the world’s only Jollytologist® and an Ambassador of Light. I show people how to use humor and positivity to help them deal with their changes, challenges and not-so-funny stuff.

What Is One Habit Of Yours That Helps You Be Productive?

I’m self-employed but treat my work as if I had a “regular” job. I’m at my desk no later than 9:00a.m. every morning. Like an office job, I take a short break in the morning, a lunch break away from my desk, and a longer afternoon break to walk my dog. I quit work anywhere from 5:00 to 6:00p.m. On most days, I then take a short nap before dinner.

What Is Your Morning Routine And How Does It Help You Get The Most Out Of Your Day?

I wake up each morning with a song of gratitude. “Thank you for this day, Lord, thank you for this day. Thank you for this day, Lord….” I believe that, along with forgiveness, being grateful is one of the most important things we can do to increase our happiness. Once the tone for my day is set, I stretch, have breakfast and review my to-do list for the day. I circle what I want to accomplish and go at it.

In The Last Few Years, What Lifestyle, Habit Or Behavior Change Has Had The Biggest Positive Impact On Your Life?

Setting a mindful chime on my smartphone which rings every hour on the hour. When it sounds, I stop and meditate, or just sit quietly for a while. Even just a few minutes of doing this relieves me from the intensity of what I’m doing. I can then return to it relaxed and refreshed.

When You Feel Unfocused, What Do You Do?

Walk away from my computer. Go to the kitchen and get some tea or a snack. Maybe pet the dog; she always wants her belly rubbed when I pass-by. And she never has a negative reaction to what I’m saying when I chat with her.

What Is One Piece Of Software Or A Web Service That You Get Immense Value Out Of? How Do You Use It?

Since I’m an author of 28 books, I guess my favorite website would be Amazon. Not for what I can purchase there but for their book listings. I can use it to research such things as what subjects are selling best, how much competition there might be for a future topic I might want to write about and how my own books are selling.

What Is The One Book You Recommend Most Often And Why?

It has to be my first book, The Healing Power of Humor. Why? Because it shows readers how to lighten up their life. Even though it was published over 25-years-ago, the information is still valuable for today’s troubled world.
And, speaking of a troubled world, I would also like to recommend two of my more recent books:
You Can’t Ruin My Day
Positive Thoughts for Troubling Times

What Advice Would You Give A Smart And Ambitious Recent College Graduate? What Advice Should They Ignore?

Advice: Follow your dreams and don’t give up. Things may get tough on the road to what you want to achieve but if you abandon them, you are guaranteed they will never happen.
Ignore: Don’t let anyone, no matter who they are, tell you that you can’t do something. Keep the passion and prove them wrong.
NOTE: I was kicked out of Yale Drama School. They basically told me that I had no talent to become a scenic designer. After the third year, I was designing major shows at a national TV station. My fellow classmates were still at Yale designing school productions.

What Is Your Favorite Quote, One You Aim To Live By?

One of my own, of course: “Your attitude is the crayons that color your world.” -Allen Klein, author
