I believe this has been the hardest year not only for me personally but also Charlie. Because once again Charlie faced bullying in school this time at the hands of his teacher.

Causing David and I to choose Homeschool Charlie again and we hadn’t prepared to Homeschool Charlie. I feel like we have spent more time fussing than Charlie getting his work done.

Charlie has decided he wants to return to school next year although he thinks he can learn better here at home.  I asked Charlie to take some time and to pray and see where the Lord lead him. Because if he returns to school, he is going to need all the Guts he has to get through the year.

As soon as I saw the Press Release for this new book Guts, I knew I had to read the story not only to myself but Charlie because I wanted to show Charlie he isn’t the only one who faces the things he has suffered. We were able to discuss Sam taking drugs at the age of 9 and as we talked about I was able to share with Charlie the things his brother went through as he started taking drugs at the age of 12 and it leads to him spending a year in jail.

Charlie and I finished the book, and I went to put it on a shelf. David asked if I would help him read this novel.  Because David  had taken drugs in the past and wanted to see how the Author dealt with his addiction,

David let me know he had to use Guts to stay alive and it leads to Charlie and David having a heart to heart talk and David being able to explain to Charlie why we would like for him to remain at home one more year for Homeschooling.

Living a life of grit and grace

GUTS will help you find that purpose driven life that is yours to live with joy, passion, and success.

Grit and grace: When Angela Duckworth wrote her best selling book Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance she could have been describing Sam Bracken who is the embodiment of living a life of grit and grace.

Find your own Duckworth grit: In this modern era, we tap an app on our smartphone, and anything you can imagine is delivered to you ─ maybe even by drone. We live in an age of convenience and ease; personal butlers are back in fashion, and everyone has a chauffeur on call thanks to Uber. When was the last time you really “went for it?” Does anyone even have to try anymore? Sam Bracken answers that question with an emphatic YES. Now, more than ever is the time to go for the gusto, to find your own Duckworth grit.

Tenacity, courage and the fire within In his book GUTS, Bracken explains why we all need to dig deep and do soul searching to see what lights the fire within that brings forth our very best. Bracken’s backstory would make Dr. Phil turn tail and run. His childhood and upbringing are unimaginably tough with years of abuse, even to the point where a relative set him on fire. What didn’t kill Sam Bracken made him stronger. And, he is now on a mission to bring self-empowerment to others ─ self-empowerment to realize a life of grit and grace.

Grit and grace and mental strength: When we say something takes guts, we usually mean it takes courage to do it. It takes guts to go skydiving or to run a marathon or to try out for the school play. We call it luck or stamina or intestinal fortitude in conquering the hard, albeit exciting, things in life. Look back at the great personalities who made a difference in the pages of history. What did they all have in common? Determination and tenacity. In short, GUTS! They might have had talent too, but without guts, they would have gone nowhere. Science now tells us that lots of talented individuals produce great stuff, but very few produce a lot of great stuff―and even fewer produce a lot of great things over a long career. What do these few highly productive people have in common? Grit and grace and a large helping of self-belief.

Purpose driven life: This book is about actually getting there. You’ll have to push past failure again and again. And it is also about beating the odds no matter high there stacked against you. To be a real leader, you have to start with yourself. Are you ready to do some soul searching and learn the secrets to guts, self-empowerment, a purpose driven life, and grit and grace?

In Sam Bracken’s GUTS, you will learn about:

  • mental strength
  • resisting feelings of low self-esteem
  • self-empowerment
  • building self-confidence
  • living a life of passion
  • and, most importantly, what it takes to have grit and grace
  • Sam Bracken
  • Sam Bracken grew up in a family best described as a cracked-out version of The Brady Bunch on an Episode of Cops, living in rundown apartments and trailers on the fringes of Las Vegas. Mobsters and motorcycle gang members were his role models. Horrifically abused by his wannabe mobster stepfather LeRoy and his sadistic older stepbrother, Sam started drinking and doing drugs by age 9. Sam’s love of sports – track and especially football – became his salvation. His dream of being a professional football player led him to a radical decision as a 13-year-old: to quit doing drugs and drinking and find a path out of the dark life he was living. He languished in special education classes until an eighth-grade teacher discovered he just needed glasses. When Sam was 15, his mom, who’d often worked three jobs to support the family, suffered a mental breakdown and abandoned him to become the den mother of the notorious Hessian motorcycle gang.

Sam graduated in 1986 from The Georgia Institute of Technology with honors and a degree in Industrial Management. In 1993 Sam received an MBA with an emphasis in Marketing from BYU’s Marriott School of Management. Sam is also a member of the National Speakers Association.

Today the abused, homeless teen in special education classes has grown into a man who lives the American dream with a beautiful family of his own. He serves as the global director of media publishing for FranklinCovey, the world’s leading training and leadership organization with services in more than 145 countries.

All in all, I believe this Novel is for anyone no, matter what they are going through and I not only think adults can learn from it but children as well. I think the book offered in Churchs and schools. For me, I plan on purchasing copies to give to the people I know that have faced difficulties of any kind in their lives.

  • A review for Mango Media who sent me a copy of the book in exchange for the review but the thoughts in this review are all mine and mine alone.
