“I Am Here to Empower People” – Interview with Author and Filmmaker G. Brian Benson

Many of us throughout life seek for answers to our own existence, and many of us most likely agree it is not always easy to understand the purpose. We might try to initiate it through our deeds and constant actions doing things that make us feel good, express our deepest feelings, make us feel better about ourselves and remove boredom and routine from our day-to-day living. Creativity is something that we are all good at whether we are aware of it or not.

However, creativity has many colours and shades and ways to manifest itself. G. Brian Benson has been an author and writer, a life-coach, an actor, a radio personality and filmmaker for more than 10 years. In 2008, Brian followed a hunch and left his family’s business and stepped into the unknown. Ever since, inspiration has followed. Letting intuition be his guide, he began to step out of his comfort zone and unexpected paths and talents started to emerge such as writing, acting, and crafting stories. Tapping into this emerging creativity, Brian began his own hero’s journey of self-realization and growth, which continues to influence his empowering and inspiring books, films, and presentations. However, nothing has ever come easy to him. It is that strong desire to search for the meaning in his life that brought him to express himself in ways he never thought he would do. And yet, no matter, how strange it might sound, at the age of three he professed to his mother that his purpose in life was “to inspire people.” In other words, to live a better, happier, more peaceful and meaningful life. You might wonder how would a three-year old boy know his life-path, but from my own similar life experience I am aware that as children we are more in tune with ourselves and our destiny, but just for some reason somewhere on the road to adulthood we seem to forget what we came here for. The time comes when we begin questioning our own existence and reach for the answers that seem to be hidden away from us. Brian feels his purpose. Now he is finding every creative way to express his own knowing by connecting with people through acts of kindness and the written word.

Brian Benson is keen to connect with people at the deeper level by first opening himself to self-discovery, vulnerability, observation of his surroundings and feelings of empathy. An empath is the one who is first in tune with himself which gives him an ability to understand others by appreciating their human nature. Brian has obtained a life-coach certificate so he could work with people on the professional level while also resonating with them personally.

So far, he has written and published 3 self-help books and two children books. The author believes that no matter the age we are all capable of bringing something beautiful into this world. It is never too late to be creative. He says, “I want people to know that it is never too late to start living the life that makes one truly fulfilled, happy; the life that brings more happiness and peace, the life that actually mean something to the one seeking it.

I try and share my experiences and self-growth process through many of my creative outlets. Books, short film, presentations and video have all allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and share projects that have meaning while at the same time are empowering and entertaining. All of my creative projects are an extension of my own being becoming more self-aware. It took me some time to dare to make the move towards the life that promised me nothing except uncertainty, challenges, hard-work and yet plenty of peace and inner-gratification. The rest comes on its own accord. The rewards of self-growth and self-awareness are immeasurable.”

The past few years have been challenging for Brian. He took the path less travelled to achieve his vision of inspiration. He opened his mind to know himself better and connected to many different people while on the path of self-discovery. It can be challenging to be vulnerable, and yet so much rewarding that even the author himself would not want it any other way. “My greatest task was to learn to love and accept myself. I am still walking towards that direction, I am still learning, I am still understanding things about myself, I am still looking for ways to bring inspiration to life, and I don’t think my journey will ever end.”

Years went by and step by step, word by word, creation by creation Brian has achieved a lot… Brian is an award-winning and #1 best-selling author, life coach, radio host, actor, filmmaker and TEDx speaker. His chosen path brought Brian to deep understanding of the value of trusting intuition and deep desire to share his own personal journey of self-growth, discovery and accomplishment to help others re-connect with their own personal truths, to live an authentic and fulfilling life. As a 4x Ironman triathlete and cross-country bicyclist, Brian knows the value of hard work and never giving up on his dreams, a message he shares with audiences through each of his creative expressions.

In 2011, Brian created the award-winning “Guitar Man”, a movie project that he wrote, produced, and acted in that was filmed in downtown Reno, Nevada, USA. Brian wrote the film based on a dream that he had. The message is profound and yet very simple: “we all have a lot in common and our true gifts reside within ourselves”. By following the dream he had and by manifesting it into the outer world, the “Guitar Man” rewarded Brian for being heard. The short film was well received and was accepted to 11 movie film festivals. It was a winner at the Love Unlimited Film and Art Festival, won an honorable mention prize in the narrative short category at the 2011 Los Angeles Movie Awards and won a Golden Reel Award from the Nevada Film Festival.

G. Brian Benson’s mission is to wake up the world with conscious, thought-provoking media that inspires. In his video “Searching for Happiness”, which, by the way, was picked up by Gaia (Conscious Media Company), Brian shows that acts of kindness and connection to others are the ones that bring colour in one’s life. We need each other in order to know ourselves and yet we need space for ourselves so as to express our inner truths with the tools of creativity.

Just recently Brian released a new book Habits for Success – Inspired Ideas to Help You Soar that has been published by Mango Publishing and has become an Amazon #1 Best- Seller. “My book brings up the things that are capable of motivating others on the path to success. Those things are simple – they are free. We gain them with our birth right and often forget the power of their own existence.” Things like being able to visualize our purpose, and the things we wish to experience in life; being ourselves and accepting ourselves just as we are; leaning back and appreciating the power of gratitude; the ability to think for ourselves; being kind; going for walks or hiking; the power of nature; laughter is another tool that is capable of bringing hope and easiness into our lives; curiosity and living in wonder that can take us to places never travelled before; being child-like where wonders of the world are rediscovered through the eyes of the child; patience and forgiveness; trusting our intuition and learning how to be creative, just to name a few. Clarity about our needs for ourselves comes in different ways. Sometimes all we need is a moment of peace where we ask ourselves – what is my purpose? And in that moment, we feel the answer. Often it seems it is balance we are seeking and trying to achieve – balance between the inner and outer worlds.

The author does not try to talk about anything we don’t know yet. He only humbly reminds his readers about the power that lies inside of our souls eagerly waiting to be noticed, used and appreciated. The rewards are sudden and profound. In his book Habits for Success – Inspired Ideas to Help You Soar he also tells stories of his own life experiences that led him to the life he lives now. Brian feels blessed with the gifts he shares with the world and he is eager to share more: “Every day I am looking for ways to be peace and joy, and I understand that it all begins with me and then spreads into the outer world. To have this weighty awareness of how powerful we, human, can be is amazing, especially knowing how much we need each other.”

As of currently, Brian lives in Los Angeles, California, where he also tries his hand at acting. “Acting brings you to this place of vulnerability. For one moment you forget your own story and become this other person, this other situation, this other experience that also teaches you a lot about you and your own life. At times it shakes you from within and at times you don’t resonate with the story-line at all, and yet you are living it through acting. Acting has been a very important tool for my own self-growth process.  Everybody should take an acting class! It has allowed me to become vulnerable in so many ways and acting forces the actor to dig deep and take a look at sometimes painful memories. I have found it to be very cathartic. Acting is an amazing tool for a creative soul.” Not everyone can embody another human being and their story. It is a place of vulnerability and empathy. It is a very deep place of feelings at times inexperienced in one’s life.

I have known Brian for a number of years and we have become great supporters of each other’s creative endeavors. Whenever we talk, we always tell each other that when we finally meet, we will have a nice lunch, a lovely cappuccino and a very long chat and friendly embrace to mark our unique friendship. Brian’s determination, incredible stamina and belief in his purpose inspires me deeply. His written word is about the life lived and the path personally travelled. He is the person who shares his inner truths based of his own life experiences and personal choices for the purpose to inspire and empower others. Brian does not try to convince you, he does not try to make you like him, he does not try to be someone he is not… He just tries to lead by his own example. It is easy to believe him, to like him and welcome him into your life. He is everyone’s friend. He is my friend. I am inspired.
