Rediscover Love and Desire after Sexual Assault

Readers of The Body Keeps the ScoreThe Deepest Well and Trauma Stewardship should read Want: Recovering Desire after Sexual Assault.

Have the courage to heal. We know, increasingly, how common and devastating sexual violence is for women, but we don’t always talk about how survivors can recover from the trauma and return to desire, sexuality, trust, and pleasure. Want is the story of how Julie Peters did just that—and how you can, too.

Move past the fog of trauma.  In the years after the assault, Julie was in what she calls the fog of trauma: the colorless, tasteless experience of barely getting through the day. No one—not counsellors, support groups, or other survivors—could give her any advice about how to find the desire that could bring her back to joy, intimacy, and connection. She had to make it up on her own. In Want, Julie tells the story of getting from the devastation of trauma to living a full life in eight sometimes challenging, often bumbling, and occasionally delightful steps.

Experience hope, healing and recovery. We have plenty of stories about the helplessness, frustration, and vengeful feelings that can follow trauma. Culturally, we have started a conversation about these experiences, and we’re all confused about what this all means for our relationships with each other. We need stories of hope, healing, and recovery. Survivors of assault, if you've been thinking to yourself, "I thought it was just me," Julie is here to show you that you are not alone. Your loved ones may not know how to support you, but they can learn more about your experiences and how to walk alongside you through this book, just as you can learn how to recover from the trauma you've experienced. Want offers a window into one person’s experience of recovery—plus the happy ending we all need to know is possible after trauma.

The Changemaker Mindset

Personality is the Key to Professional Success

Personal relationships are key to success: In a time when workplaces are becoming more digital and more automated every day, our mindsets and our personal relationships will determine whether we succeed in tomorrow’s markets. We all have one shot to make a lasting impact. Innovators with the changemaker mindset know how to see that opportunity when it comes and make it matter.

The human success factor: In the coming years, the human success factor will determine who is among the winners and who is among the losers. All business adventures start with a focus on the self. When you know who you are and develop a deep sense of confidence in yourself, you’ll have the flexibility to roll with the punches.

Change comes from within: Whether your goal is to lead a self-determined life, position your company for the future, or be a successful part of a team, external change starts with internal transformation.

With The Changemaker Mindset, you’ll master the three Ps of personal development:

  • Purpose. Reconsider what motivates you and find your non-negotiable core principles.
  • People. Build a strong inner circle of peers, because nobody wins alone.
  • Persistence. Develop the confidence to take action, navigate setbacks, and implement change.

Readers who liked The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, Leading Change by John Kotter, and The Innovator's Dilemma: When New Technologies Cause Great Firms to Fail by Clayton Christensen will love this new approach to effective business management from personal development.

Your Life is Your Prayer

Inspirational and Spiritual Prayer Guide

If you liked Help, Thanks, Wow by Anne Lamott or Anxious for Nothing by Max Lucado, you’ll love Your Life is Your Prayer.

Prayer can point your life in the right direction—or the wrong one: Whatever you’ve got going on in your life is what you’ve been praying for—sometimes consciously, but often unconsciously. If you want something different in your life, you must pray a different prayer. Your Life is Your Prayer by BJ Gallagher and Sam Beasley will show you how to do just that.

Everything you do is prayer: You may not realize it—many people don’t—but the decisions you make throughout the day, the attitudes you adopt, the conversations you have, the way you respond to other people, and the thoughts you think are all prayers. The food you choose to eat is a prayer, the way you spend your money is a prayer—even the way you drive is a prayer! We are constantly communing with the Divine, even in our most mundane activities. And our prayers are always answered in the affirmative: “Yes.”

The Universe will give you what you're praying for: Whatever you’re thinking about (and therefore praying about) will manifest in your life. If you are worrying, "I don’t have enough money," the Universe will say ‘Yes, you don’t have enough money.’ If you’re constantly lamenting, "I don’t have a man in my life," the Universe will respond, ‘Yes, you don’t have a man.’ If you frequently complain, "I’m fat," the Universe will answer, ‘Yes, you’re fat.’ Your thoughts and words are prayers, and the Universe always gives you what you’re praying for.

Your Life is Your Prayer will show you how to change your life by changing your prayer:

  • Learn how to stop complaining
  • Discover how to focus on what you do want, not what you don’t want
  • Learn how to make your prayers positive and affirming—to get more of what you want in your life
  • Discover how, by constantly choosing new thoughts and new conversations, you will literally create a new life for yourself

Own It All

By

Own It All is intended for… - A woman who currently feels stressed out, depleted, overwhelmed, and unsatisfied—like she’s the underpaid intern of her life rather than the CEO. - A woman who wants to change one—or several—areas of her life, and who wants powerful stories, motivation, and guidance from someone who’s been there and done it. - A woman who wants to build a world with equal pay, equal opportunities, equal rights, and more women in positions of leadership. She’s definitely a feminist, even if she doesn’t necessarily use that word to describe herself. - A woman who’s interested in yoga, barre, pilates, and other types of fitness—although she probably doesn’t make it to class as often as she’d like. - A woman who’s inspired by powerful women like Michelle Obama, Elizabeth Warren, Maxine Waters, Misty Copeland, and Beyoncé. She loves their confidence and the purposeful way they lead their lives. She doesn’t necessarily want to be a “politician” or a “famous artist,” but she wants to build her own kind of legacy. - Her desk is stacked with copies of O: The Oprah Magazine and books like You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero, #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso, and The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. She loves reading true stories about overcoming adversity. - She’s busy with work, kids, and many other responsibilities, and doesn’t have time for long-winded stories and airy-fairy guidance. She gravitates towards blunt, honest, straightforward writers who get right to the point. - She’s tired of postponing goals, dreams, and changes until “someday later,” and she’s tired of feeling pulled in too many directions. She wants to get clear on her goals, prioritize like a mofo, and make things happen.

Winning My Battle With Eating Disorders

Finding My FULL: This is my journey from starving to letting myself be FULL–physically & emotionally. What is living a FULL life? Having anorexia, bulimia, or vacillating between the two, you are trying to achieve an empty feeling through starvation or purging. Living a FULL life is a life where you aren’t starving anymore―starving for acceptance and love from others and yourself. It’s a life where you are feeding your mind and soul with good thoughts and foods. A life without your eating disorder.

Victim of the eating disorder monster: Imagine waking in a hospital bed to find your frail, pale arm punctured by an IV transferring fluids and nutrients into your weak, stiff body. What happened? You’re an adult, age twenty-six, and you just had a seizure precipitated by your chronic, secretive, decades-long struggle with unacknowledged eating disorders. You have no friends and no normal young-adult experiences. Living FULL is written by Danielle Sherman-Lazar, a woman who passed through the eating disorder crucible to recovery, sharing the most intimate and shameful details of her mental illness. Living FULL is Danielle's story.

Hidden out of shame: Eating disorders in young adults are hardly talked about, but are pervasive. Eating disorders are kept hidden out of shame. A groundbreaking 2012 study published in the International Journal of Eating Disorders found that about 13 percent of women over age 50 exhibit eating disorder symptoms.

Journey to recovery: Living FULL chronicles the author's step-by-step descent into the full-blown eating disorder nightmare and her path to recovery. Recovery comes from the Maudsley Approach, a regimen of supervised controlled eating or refeeding by out-patient helpers that eventually can result in recovery.

Benefits of reading Living FULL:

  • See how to confront your eating disorder demon
  • Learn from someone who won her eating disorder battle
  • Discover a new and beautiful life

How to Ikigai

By

Why isn’t every day meaningful for every person? Is it even possible to live each day in meaningful ways? Sure it is. Let me tell you about a tiny, tiny, tiny little island south of Japan where people live their life’s purpose every day. They are happy. They are fulfilled. They are some of the oldest living people in the world. Their secret is ikigai. Ikigai is a concept that comes from Okinawa, Japan. Ikigai is a simple but abstract map for living a meaningful life. It has four directions: 1. Do what you love 2. Do what you’re good at 3. Do what the world needs 4. Do what you can be rewarded for Although these directions seem simple they are deceivingly difficult to do. This book will transform ikigai from its abstract form into a simple practice that is within reach for anyone. The key is to start with part-time ikigai. Examples of ikigai in action are often magical. As a young boy and into his adulthood David Michaels stuttered severely. In clinical terms his stutter was considered the most difficult to treat. But David started to work in a liquor store. Before long his focus turned to one specific section of the sales floor; the scotch section. He learned that each scotch whiskey ever made has unique tasting notes that make it special. David became obsessed with scotch. As he spent more of his days learning about scotch he began to share his knowledge with customers. Like singer Mel Tillis' stutter disappeared when he sang, David noticed that his stutter vanished when he talked to anyone about scotch. David credits his triumph over his stutter to his passion for scotch whiskey. Today he is a renowned whiskey expert and travels the world tasting and purchasing whiskey on behalf of his employer. He feels his life is meaningful because of ikigai. In the 1990's Kevin Kent worked as a sous chef at the famed St. John restaurant under celebrated chef Fergus Henderson. One day in the kitchen Kevin saw another worker using a Japanese carbon steel knife. It was the most beautiful tool / piece of art he had ever seen. Of course he wanted one. But Japanese knives are handmade and expensive. Kevin decided to save up to purchase one for himself. He was hooked by the romance of forged steel honed razor sharp into a blade that made his job a delight. Kevin moved back to Calgary. His passion for Japanese knives followed him. He continued his trade in the kitchen but he brought a few knives back from London to sell to other chefs. Kevin's flare for knife sales was immediate. So he went to work to open a shop that specialized in Japanese knives. He made friendships and connections with important knife makers in Japan. He opened his first store called Knifewear. His ikigai is the usefulness and art of sharpness. Today Kevin owns four Knifewear stores. He is considered the leading expert and supplier of Japanese knives in Canada. Mandy Stobo has a knack for connecting to people through her art. When she was a young single mother she struggled to understand how her art could matter during the social media explosion. She started to grab profile photos of remarkable people online and paint “bad portraits” of them. She’d snap a photo and send them a copy of her painting with the heading “Bad Portrait time!” The recipients started to use their bad portraits as their profile photos. Her popularity and connection to people grew. Today, Mandy will happily paint a bad portrait of anyone who asks. She has a special double ikigai: “To create” and “To delight”

Risking the Rapids

#1 Amazon New Release! ─ Memoir and Portrait of a Family at Its Worst and Best

Some memoirs shock. Some entertain. Some take us places we’re afraid to go. A rare few move us. Once in a blue moon, a book does it all. This is Risking the Rapids.

Dysfunctional family. Risking the Rapids opens with the shocking death of O’Garden’s older brother, which prompts her and other relatives to seek closure on a journey through the remotest spot in Montana. Described genially as a river “float”, a harrowing journey unfolds. This wilderness trip is contrasted with O’Garden’s account of growing up with her six siblings in a clashing Catholic family.

Alcoholic father, mean mother, Catholic guilt. WCCO-TV personality Don O’Brien was well-known in the Twin Cities and in Minnesota. Whether forecasting weather and trading wisecracks with the anchor on the nightly news, pitching for sponsors, or hosting a Saturday night movie, he was a man people trusted. In private, Don O’Brien’s family life was a far cry from what his fans saw on TV. Little by little we see the corrosion: nightly martinis shared with his wife Betty, an undemonstrative and icy-hearted mother. The neglect. The poisoning of self-esteem. The rigidity demanded by the Catholic church. Competition. Cruelty. All packed into ordinary days and nights as a sensitive girl comes of age.

Anxiety and danger. The children vary in their response to the profound anxiety sown in the offspring of alcoholics. One brother bites his fingers to gangrene. One relentlessly bullies the author, who begins overeating compulsively. One severs all ties with the family. Danger mounts as well on the Montana raft trip, when unusual river conditions swell and speed the waters. Both stories build with escalating intensity to excruciating climaxes.

If you read and liked books such as The Liars’ ClubThe Wounded HeartComing CleanChange Me into Zeus's Daughter, or Remember Me As Loving You, you will want to read Risking the Rapids.

The next she was back home in Houston, sitting in her Ob-Gyn’s office concerned that she was having a second miscarriage. That wasn’t the news he delivered. Instead, she found out she was pregnant with twins! Since Crystal and her husband Ed already had a two-year-old daughter, Abigail, she couldn’t imagine why mothering twins would be all that different. But, after a family vacation at the beach, she finds out that her twins have a life threatening condition called Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. That means that Baby B is transfusing blood (disproportionately) to Baby A. Houston, we have a problem! Her OB says that Crystal is too high risk to let out of his sight, so he sends her to the 5th floor of the Houston Medical Center for the duration of her pregnancy. Sitting alone in her hospital bed, Crystal wonders how she is going to pass the next few weeks, away from her husband and precious daughter. She soon finds out as she embarks on an emotional rollercoaster—from late night emergency ultrasounds to hospital baby blessings, sprinkled with comic relief from nurses and hospital staff. During these uncertain times, daily news reports focus on disturbing events such as drug addiction, acts of terrorism, gun violence, airplane rage, senseless murders and political bickering. We are being bombarded daily with images that evoke a sense of fear and hostility. The Kindness Rocks Project provides a positive counteraction to all this negativity. The tagline for The Kindness Rocks Project is “one message at just the right time can change your entire day, outlook, life”. Sometimes, all it takes is just one simple positive message to change your perspective and that is what my book aims to do. Through visual photos of inspirational Kindness rocks as chapter prompts, the reader will engage with the rocks inspirational message illustrating a virtue. The chapter will then expand on that message through a lesson, reflection, story or teaching. Since virtues are traits of character that lead to good behavior, each chapter will highlight and focus on one virtue at a time. This will encourage and ignite a collective consciousness around good behavior leading to random acts of kindness. Each chapter will be concise thus making the book a great inspirational gift.
