Applying Lessons from Military Life to Create Success in Business Startups

By Jen Griswold, Jen E. Griswold

#1 Amazon New Release! ─ Women + Military = Entrepreneurs

Career military? Leaving the military for civilian life? You can leverage your experience into some great new business startup ideas.

Business success: Military spouses can face serious challenges when trying to develop a career while part of the military life, or equally serious challenges when they transition to civilian life. But, help is on the way in Mission Entrepreneur: Applying Lessons from Military Life to Create Success in Business Startups

Finding startup ideas that can make you a business success: Are you trying to find your niche in our modern world of underemployment and the self-employed, where many are looking for great startup ideas and the opportunity to build wealth and find happiness and fulfillment? Some of the best startup ideas are yet to be discovered and Mission Entrepreneur will guide you through Jen E. Griswold's journey toward realizing her personal dream of becoming one of the successful women entrepreneurs. Experiencing underemployment as a military spouse, she learns how to turn her military experience into business success.

The underemployment problem: Being a military spouse comes with sacrifices. Spouses give up college degrees, careers and put other plans on hold due to military relocations. The country feels the effects. Reports show that 90% of female spouses face underemployment and countless income tax dollars are lost. As both a spouse and veteran for 20 years, Jen E. Griswold witnessed many spouses trying to keep a career going through their first few assignments. After multiple failed attempts and the addition of kids, they often gave up, deciding their efforts were futile. Their confidence waned and they began to question their self-worth.

Women entrepreneurs: Ironically, these same people have the perfect set of skills needed to become successful women entrepreneurs: work ethic, vision, passion, and resilience. These are the exact same skills that have helped them endure a life of sacrifice in the military. But, in most cases, they have given up on their own personal big visions to change the world. Using a lifetime of experience, military trained veterans entering the job force know how to manage the bumpy journey to becoming men and women entrepreneurs and finding those great startup ideas.

Mission Entrepreneur: From her extensive training in the Air Force and experience coaching women over the past several years, Griswold discovered that by giving back to her military community, she could change the world a little bit every day. America needs more men and women entrepreneurs who pay it forward and here is where we’ll start. Welcome to Mission Entrepreneur.

Your Leadership Moment

This book is for:

  1. Social entrepreneurs. Much of the insight in YLM comes from the author’s pioneering work on leadership for social enterprises and impact investors. Through work with organizations such as Acumen, which is the world’s pre-eminent impact investor, YLM has a potential audience of approximately 800,000 change-makers, students of leadership, and highly-influential thought leaders worldwide, all of whom have been directly exposed to me and my work. There is a strong market here.
  2. Current/former clients, students of Adaptive Leadership and purchasers of previous books. The leadership model upon which YLM is based has a strong following of approximately 12,000 students from Harvard Kennedy School and another 15,000-20,000 who have taken an in-person course. This is the kind of audience that has already demonstrated its willingness to purchase this kind of book. I reach about 1,000 participants per year in person, each of whom would be required to purchase a copy of the book. I also have deep reach with key influencers in emerging markets in Kenya, Nigeria, India, and elsewhere across East Africa, who are committed to democratizing leadership.
  3. General leadership development readers, practitioners and trainers. The leadership development market in the US alone is approximately $50 billion annually and growing. Figures are hard to come by on how much is spent on books. As a proxy indicator, Harvard Business Review (HBR) and Stanford Social Innovation Review (SSIR) have approximately 2.5 million unique visitors per month. HBR also has 286,000 paying subscribers. Given HBR and SSIR’s demonstrated interest in the leadership model described in YLM, a coordinated effort to engage them in promotion is worth pursuing.
  4. Grantmaking executives and program officers working on democracy building and civic engagement. Philanthropic and grantmaking organizations give approximately $140 billion/year, of which about $26.8 billion go to causes of topical interest to YLM. A number of my clients are drawn from this audience, including the Obama Foundation in Chicago, the Democracy Fund in DC, the Heinz Endowment in Pittsburgh (John Kerry’s wife’s family’s org), USAID, and the Rockefeller Foundation in NYC. All have expressed a strong interest in supporting the message and circulation of this book.
  5. Executives of companies and organization who are trying to democratize “X”. It seems these days that everyone is trying to democratize something, e.g. technology, data privacy, blockchain, energy access, health access, etc. I have worked with organizations such as Google, Microsoft and the premier blockchain company on the nexus of YLM and their work. These executives and the thousands of employees I have worked with over the years are a ripe audience for this book. In fact, Google’s former head of HR Laszlo Bock has written his own book Work Rules!: Insights from Inside Google That Will Transform How You  Live..., which acknowledges the value of the adaptive leadership model to Google’s growth.
  6. People like the author’s own family. Last, but not at all least, the hope is that this book and its message will find its way into the hands of people like the author’s father. Blue-collar, “purple” state, Trump-Obama voters, who hold tremendous sway on the direction of American democracy. People such as PTA Presidents, local political hopefuls, and other local civic groups hold the most hope for restoring a vibrant democracy. The down to earth, un-jargony tone of YLM aims to reach this audience as a secondary target.

#1 New Release in Civil Engineering & Environmental ─ The New Orleans Flood, U.S. Corruption, and Other Types of Disasters

In the aftermath of one of the worst disasters in U.S. history, Words Whispered in Water tells the story of one woman’s fight—against all odds—to expose a mammoth federal agency—and win.

It’s a horror story, a mystery, and David and Goliath story all in one. In 2005, the entire world watched as a major U.S. city was nearly wiped off the map. The levees ruptured and New Orleans drowned. But while newscasters attributed the New Orleans flood to “natural catastrophes” and other types of disasters, citizen investigator Sandy Rosenthal set out to expose the true culprit and compel the media and government to tell the truth. This is her story.

When the protective steel flood-walls broke, the Army Corps of Engineers—with cooperation from big media—turned the blame on natural types of disasters. In the chaotic aftermath, Rosenthal uncovers the U.S. corruption, and big media at root. Follow this New Orleans hero as she exposes the federal agency’s egregious design errors and eventually changes the narrative surrounding the New Orleans flood. In this engaging and revealing tale of man versus nature and man versus man, Words Whispered in Water proves that the power of a single individual is alive and well.

How Keeping Negative People at Bay Can Lead to Positive Thinking and Peak Performance

Successfully steer your own life instead of having it determined by others, advises Tobias Beck in this German bestseller.

Energy vampires, and chronic complainers. We all know a Debbie Downer with a negative attitude, moaning the whole day long because nothing ever goes right: the weather is miserable, it’s Monday, and to top it all off, the doughnut has a hole! Tobias shows us there’s a way out: to simply not bother with such relationships at all. Polarizing, provocative and exaggerated, the Liberated® philosophy urges readers to liberate themselves from negative people in order to live successfully and authentically.

Memorable stories and proven techniques. With success stories that are as entertaining as they are instructive and success factors based on 15 years of personal experience in the field of personality development and behavioral psychology, Unbox Your Life features proven-to-work strategies. Easy to read and unconventional, it is part workbook, self-help, nonfiction, and narrative; it also features funny comics to illustrate how to:

  • Think in terms of chances and opportunities rather than problems and risks
  • Motivate yourself, forge your own path, and let yourself be guided by your dreams and vision
  • Seek out people who support you, let you grow, and move forward
